Sununu holds large lead over Brown in clash between former senators
Endorsed by President Trump, ex-Sen. John E. Sununu holds a huge edge over ex-Sen. Scott Brown in the New Hampshire GOP primary for Senate. Both candidates are seeking a comeback. In 2008, now-retiring Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen ousted then-incumbent Sen. Sununu, and she also defeated Brown in 2014 when he ran here after previously representing Massachusetts.

Gov. Dan McKee trails badly in Rhode Island
Democratic Gov. Dan McKee is in serious danger of losing renomination in Rhode Island on Sept. 9 (a rare Wednesday primary). He trails former CVS Pharmacy executive Helena Buonanno Foulkes 47%-24% in Decision Desk HQ's new polling average of the Democratic primary. The contest is a rematch between the two leading vote-getters in the party's 2022 primary for governor.
One old progressive, two old moderates win in Massachusetts
In Massachusetts, three Democratic members of Congress older than 70 defeated serious primary challengers. Unusually for 2026, one — Sen. Ed Markey — was an old progressive running against a younger moderate. But the other two — Reps. Richard Neal and Stephen Lynch — fended off progressives, though in the closest races of their respective careers.

In today's Massachusetts Democratic primary for Senate, Sen. Ed Markey leads Rep. Seth Moulton by a sizable margin in DDHQ's polling average. The 47-year old Moulton is mounting a primary challenge centered on the argument that the 80-year old Markey is too old to stay in office. But Markey's more progressive stances seem to have kept more Democrats on his side.

Tuesday's most-watched race is Massachusetts's Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, a clash between 80-year old Sen. Ed Markey and 47-year old Rep. Seth Moulton. The contest features ideological- and age-based differences, but unlike many other 2026 Democratic primaries, the old incumbent is the more progressive pick and the younger challenger is more moderate.
Senate forecast shows a toss-up race
Don’t look now, but the battle for the Senate is nearly a pure toss-up. In Decision Desk HQ’s midterm election forecast, Republicans now have a 52% chance of winning a majority, while Democrats have a 48% shot — the narrowest gap between the parties’ chances since early June. Statistically, this is not substantively different from a coin flip.
